Alec Benjamin’s new single ‘Mind Is A Prison’, released 12th
December, demonstrates the mental struggle of feeling trapped by one’s
thoughts. The official music video, released 11 days after the single dropped, brings
this struggle to life with claustrophobic visuals that coincide with Benjamin’s
lyrics “they put me back in my cell all
by myself, alone with my thoughts again”. An ominous image begins the video
with Benjamin floating unconsciously under a depth of water, much like the
introduction to a drama or thriller movie. After the single’s title, a gradual
zoom-out on Benjamin’s solemn expression, initially gives the impression that
he is in an everyday room space. However, we witness a sudden cut to him
sitting, hands chained behind his back in a large, yet confining, aquatic tank,
slowly filling with water. This chilling scenario provides a new imaginary
perspective of being stuck with thoughts, transforming mental imagery into
physical restraint and visual metaphor.
The scene then moves to a dark room with Benjamin,
surrounded by shelves stacked with small aquatic tanks, head down with the
lyrics “alone with my thoughts again” whilst
a clinical light flickers in the background emanating a psychological thriller
aspect to the video. The water rises alarmingly in Benjamin’s tank as the video
proceeds, leaving Benjamin no choice but to give in to the water consuming him.
A certainly nail-biting, edge-of-your-seat watch.
